Timothy Yu, age eight, has passed the ABRSM Violin exams with merit in grade three. He was awarded 1st place in C group of Violin-Viola Solo for Preschool-Grade 4 in PAFE( Performing Arts Festival of the Eastside) Festival 2021. And Honorable Mention in A group of Violin-Viola Concerto for Preschool-Grade 4 in PAFE Festival 2021. He was invited to perform in BYSO's 2021 Growing Musicians Virtual Garden Party. He takes part in the Bellevue Youth Symphony Orchestra every year. During the pandemic, he enrolled in the virtual orchestra program in Seattle Youth Symphony Orchestra. Currently he is a student of her mother, Gloria Guo. Now he is in 2nd grade in Somerset Elementary School. The piece, Air Varie, he performs is the one he won 1st place in April this year.
Melanie Grad lives in Somerset Woods and attends 4th grade at Somerset Elementary. She started playing cello at age 4 and later also started playing piano, both with the Suzuki method. Melanie is playing Adagio and Allegro from Sonata in e-minor by Benedetto Marcello on cello.
Haley Montelaro is a freshman at Newport. She's been taking piano lessons on and off for most of her life, but she's always been doing something musical even if she wasn't taking piano lessons. She started taking more serious piano lessons this summer. She also sings and enjoys writing songs.
Belinda Chen is a pianist who recently graduated with her doctorate in piano performance from the University of Miami, where her dissertation explored the relationship between music and literature. Belinda has performed at Kennedy Center’s Millennium Stage in Washington D.C, the Teatro Massimio Vincenzo Bellini in Catania, Italy, the Savannah International Trade and Convention Center in Savannah, GA, and the Osaka International House in Osaka, Japan. She has performed as a soloist with the Bellini Symphony Orchestra in Catania, Italy, and the Frost Symphony Orchestra in Miami, FL.
"Embraceable You" is a song originally by George Gershwin published in 1928, but transcribed into a piano etude by pianist Earl Wilde. It features many of the qualities that Gershwin is best well-known for: lovely melodies, jazzy harmonies, and a romantic but light atmosphere.
Jacqueline Bays-muchmore: I grew up playing recorders with my father in the 1970s but that stopped once I hit high school. During the pandemic, I rediscovered our recorders and the music my parents had kept all this time. Working from home has allowed me extra time to add music back into my life, though sadly not with my father anymore.
The piece is from the late 1400s, a French song “Helas, dame que j’ayme tant”. It is played on soprano, alto and bass recorders, each recorded multiple times. The images are from one of my late winter walks in the woods to give a calm feeling to match the music.
Looking forward to seeing you all at the concert!
